DTF (Direct to Film) transfers create vibrant, durable designs on your custom apparel—but proper care is essential to maintain that professional quality wash after wash. Follow these care instructions to maximize the life of your DTF printed garments.
Washing Your DTF Printed Apparel
Before the First Wash
Wait at least 24 hours after applying your DTF transfer before the first wash. This allows the adhesive to fully cure and bond with the fabric.
Machine Washing Guidelines
- Turn garments inside out to protect the printed design from friction
- Use cold water (30°C/86°F or lower) to prevent heat damage
- Select a gentle cycle to reduce agitation
- Use mild detergent—avoid bleach or harsh chemicals that can fade or crack the print
- Wash with similar colors to prevent color bleeding
Hand Washing (Recommended for Best Results)
For maximum longevity, hand wash your DTF printed items in cold water with a gentle detergent. Gently squeeze the fabric rather than twisting or wringing.
Drying Your DTF Transfers
Air Drying (Best Option)
Hang or lay flat to dry away from direct sunlight. This is the gentlest method and will help your prints last longer.
Machine Drying
If you must use a dryer:
- Keep garments turned inside out
- Use low heat or tumble dry low
- Remove promptly to prevent wrinkles
- Avoid high heat settings that can damage the transfer
Ironing and Heat Pressing
Never iron directly on the DTF print. If ironing is necessary:
- Turn the garment inside out
- Use a low to medium heat setting
- Place a protective cloth or parchment paper over the design if ironing from the front
- Avoid steam directly on the print
What to Avoid
To keep your DTF transfers in pristine condition, avoid:
- Bleach and fabric softeners
- Dry cleaning chemicals
- Excessive heat (hot water, high dryer settings, direct ironing)
- Aggressive scrubbing or brushing of the printed area
- Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight when drying
Expected Lifespan
With proper care, DTF transfers can last 80 to 100+ washes while maintaining vibrant colors and sharp details. Following these guidelines ensures your custom designs stay looking professional for years to come.
